The College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources & BioSecurity is one of the Colleges of Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. It was founded in 1922 and it is the only institution offering Veterinary degrees in the country. It focuses mainly on training, research and outreach services. The College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources & Biosecurity (CoVAB) is repositioning itself in line with both the Makerere University Strategy (2010-2020) to meet emerging development challenges, and the National Vision (2010-2040) to transform Uganda from a peasant to a modern and prosperous society.

CoVAB’s Global Development Mandates are:

• Veterinary Services-securing the wellbeing of animals.
• Animal Resources Development-securing economic opportunities from the animal world (wealth, livelihood, production, employment).
• Sustainable Biosecurity-securing the freedom, integrity and sustainability of humanity, economic and security systems from the dangers posed by life threatening biological agents at national, regional and global level.

About Us

The College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources & BioSecurity (CoVAB), Makerere University is the oldest and leading academic veterinary institution in the region. It is Uganda’s number one academic, research and education pillar in the animal and associated industries. CoVAB was established in 1922 as a technical certificate training unit of Makerere College that was later upgraded to a veterinary diploma training department in 1949 under British colonial rule. From 1953, the department offered a Veterinary degree of the University of London until 1963 when it reverted to the University of East Africa. The Makerere University Act of 1970 established it as a legal entity that became the Makerere University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 1971. It is now one of the Colleges of Makerere University.

Education

Under its two schools that is: The School of Biosecurity, Biotechnical and Laboratory Services and the School of Veterinary Medicine & Animal Resources, the college offers a number of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
The undergraduate programmes include:

• Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM)
• Bachelor of Biomedical Laboratory Technology (BLT)
• Bachelor of Wildlife Health Management (WHM)
• Bachelor of Animal Production Technology and Management (BAPTM)

The postgraduate programmes include:

• Masters degree in Veterinary Pathology
• Masters degree in Food Animal Health and Production
• Masters degree in Wildlife Health and Management
• Masters degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
• Masters degree in Veterinary Preventive Medicine
• Masters degree in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences and Management
• Masters degree in Wildlife tourism and recreational management
• Masters in trans-boundary animal disease management

Many other programmes at the level of masters degree are offered jointly with other internationally recognized universities.

PhD in any Discipline, Postgraduate diplomas and a number of short certificate courses.

CoVAB, in partnership with the Government of Uganda have introduced a unique training model, with a unique curriculum (a blend of entrepreneurial, vocational, intellectual and managerial skills) and unique graduates (with skills, an enterprise and quality certificate). In this model, no school leaver is useless. The model is designed to take the university into communities by engaging academia as partners in development under the AFRISA platform. Courses include production, value addition and entrepreneurship in poultry, dairy, leather, meat, pig, fish, animal feeds and wildlife. Others are Companion animal production, training and management, Laboratory Science Education and Industrial technology.

Current Research

The College carries out research which is geared towards animal production, animal health, microbiology. It has numerous research laboratories which includes an avian influenza lab which is well equipped.

Clinical Services

The college offers a number of clinical services to the community. It has a small animal clinic to provide clinical services to small animal owners. It also provides large animal clinical services amidst other services like Ambulatory clinical services, Artificial insemination, Diagnostic services (post mortem & laboratory), Feed/food analysis and formulation, Consultancy services, Extension and advisory services, Student farm attachment and internship services, Mass vaccination and treatment of livestock.
