Students at the school can pursue a variety of exciting disciplines that relate to the science of life on our planet, spanning the study of animals, plants, microorganisms, the environment, chemical processes and the molecular basis of health and disease - in humans, animals and plants. We offer some of the country’s most progressive courses in environmental, biological and veterinary science, and are driven to developing individuals who are interested in all components of our living world.

We are continually generating research that addresses significant issues in our local, state and regional communities, as well as being of international significance. We maintain strong relationships with government agencies, major research laboratories, industry partners and key Universities and academics throughout the world.

About Us

The School of Veterinary and Life Sciences (“VLS”) was formed in January 2013 from an amalgamation of the Schools of Veterinary and Biomedical Science, Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, Environmental Science, and Chemistry. The combination of these individually strong areas has resulted in a new and enlarged School with major strengths in teaching and research across the whole of the life sciences.

The School has an internationally accredited veterinary course embedded in it and has close access to farmland and to a major tertiary hospital precinct. VLS is well resourced with excellent teaching and research facilities and has highly qualified academic and general staff who are aligned over five overlapping areas:

  • Agricultural and Fisheries Sciences
  • Environmental and Conservation Sciences
  • Molecular and Biomedical Sciences
  • Murdoch University College of Veterinary Medicine

The School offers a variety of undergraduate courses with potential for double majors, postgraduate courses, and research degrees.

Current Research

Research and the School of Veterinary and Life Sciences covers a broard range of themes and contains more than 30 individual research groups and centres. Our research is driven by passionate teams of people who bring together research groups, academic staff and research students. Many of our research groups and centres have achieved international recognition and collaborate extensively to offer a multi-disciplinary aspect to many projects.

Clinical Services

Murdoch’s College of Veterinary Medicine was the first in Australia to be built ‘from scratch’ as a purpose-designed veterinary teaching and research facility, and this is reflected today in the wealth of integrated, on-site facilities providing animal, clinical and research exposure for undergraduates. These include spacious multi-purpose teaching laboratories and lecture theatres, a multi-user microscopy teaching facility, an in-house histology and immunohistochemistry laboratory, purpose-designed anatomy and pathology dissection suites, and a world-class anatomy museum.

The Veterinary Clinical Sciences building in the heart of the School houses a modern teaching and referral Hospital for small animals, horses and production animals, a regional Pet Emergency Centre, and a superbly appointed Surgical Teaching Facility. Uniquely for a suburban campus, an on-site farm allows production animal handling and clinical skills training within the main university site. Several off-campus farms further expand the teaching facilities for animal production and pasture management.

The College maintains its own dedicated library and learning common for student use, and common rooms as a social hub for the students of each course.
