Bovine Enzootic Haematuria

a condition associated with the ingestion of bracken fern and characterised by persistent haematuria and anaemia. The chronic inflammatory changes that occur in this condition proceed to neoplasia.

Gross pathology of Bovine enzootic haematuria
  • 90% of the haemorrhages occur in the bladder.
  • Presence of pea-sized reddish black nodules in the mucosa.
  • Later stages develop into wart-like or cauliflower-like growths.
Histopathology of Bovine enzootic haematuria
  • Presence of dilated vessels. (These represent the black nodules seen on gross analysis.)
  • Epithelium can show progression from hyperplasia to metaplastia or neoplasia.
