ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF CONCEPCIÓN

The University of Concepción (in Spanish: Universidad de Concepción), also known for its acronym UdeC, is one of the most prestigious universities in Chile. Founded in 1919, it is the third oldest university in the country, and it is part of the Chancellor's Council of Chilean Universities. It was the first University founded in the South of Chile, and the first to become a private-law corporation.
Its main campus is located at the City of Concepción, with additional campuses in Chillán and Los Ángeles.
Currently, the School of Veterinary Sciences operates on two campuses which are located in Chillán and Concepción.

SCHOOL OF VETERINARY SCIENCES

History

Veterinary medicine was firstly founded in the City of Concepción in 1972, under tuition of the Biology Institute attached to its own School, the School of Veterinary Medicine. Later in 1973 it was moved to the Chillán campus where the administrative structure was changed, giving rise to the Department of Veterinary Medicine as part of the School of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences.
The Department of Veterinary Medicine later combined with the School of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences and the School was then known as “School of Agronomic, Veterinary and Forestry Sciences”. Thereafter, the carrer leading to the professional degree of Agricultural Engineering was created at the Chillán campus and the Forestry Engineering was moved to Concepción campus. In 1993 the School of Agronomic, Veterinary and Forestry Sciences was transformed into the schools that currently belong to the Chillán campus; School of Veterinary Medicine, School of Agronomy and School of Agricultural Engineering.
In 2002 the Veterinary Clinical Hospital was opened at the Chillán campus. Subsequently the School of Veterinary Medicine changed its name to School of Veterinary Sciences which then lead to the opening (in parallel to Chillan) of the Veterinary Medicine course at the Concepción campus in 2004. In 2007, UdeC Veterinary Clinic was opened at the Concepción campus.

Besides a solid scientific background, the student receives a complete practical training, which allows them efficiently to apply the acquired knowledge.
The subjects are grouped into three cycles. The first three semesters are a general teaching cycle, with emphasis on basic and biomedical sciences. The next four semesters constitute a stage in which accentuates the specialized scientific and technological training. The three remaining semesters set the professional training cycle aimed at medical and surgical formation, the application of productive technologies, environmental protection and public health.
