Dorsal displacement of soft palate (DDSP)

  • Occurs mainly in horses
  • Dynamic
  • Marked ulceration of caudal boarder of soft palate due to its flapping
  • 50% have concurrent lower airway disease
  • Sometimes improves with improved fitness
  • May be associated with trigeminal, vagus and glossopharyngeal neuropathies

Permanent dorsal displacement of soft palate

  • Secondary to neurological damage (e.g. guttural pouch disease, neoplasia, peripheral neuropathies
  • Mainly in horses
