Rat snakes are common pet snakes of the family Colubridae. They comprise many species including green rat snakes (Elaphe triapsis), black rat snakes (Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta), Texas rat snakes (Elaphe obsoleta lindheimeri), transpecos rat snakes (Elaphe subocularis) and Everglades rat snakes (Elaphe obsoleta rossalleni).
