Stage 1

  • Slow movements
  • Muscles not relaxed
  • Positive righting reflex
  • Tongue withdrawal reflex present
  • Painful stimuli are registered
  • Slithering movements present

Stage 2

  • Few spontaneous movements
  • Light muscle relaxation
  • Poor righting reflex
  • Tongue withdrawal reflex decreased
  • Responses to painful stimuli reduced or absent
  • Slithering movements almost abolished

Stage 3 - Surgical plane of anaesthesia

  • No movements
  • Marked to complete muscle relaxation
  • No tongue withdrawal reflex
  • No responses to painful stimuli
  • No slithering movements
