Any conditions which cause tenesmus can cause rectal prolapse, this includes:

  • Gastrointestinal disease
    • Parasites
    • Tumours
    • Foreign bodies
    • Colitis
    • Megacolon
  • Urogenital disease
    • Cystitis
    • Prostatic disease
    • Extensive transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder in cats
  • Perineal hernia
  • Dystocia
