Lampropeltis spp. (subfamily Colubrinae, family Colubridae) comprises the kingsnakes and the milk snakes. There are upwards of seven species and confusion over the taxonomy of several species. All species are medium sized snakes with smooth shiny scales and cylindrical bodies. Most are nocturnal and all are viviparous.
