Nocardia species

Nocardia species are facultative intracellular aerobic organisms that grow non-motile short branching rods. They can be grown on Sabouraud dextrose agar - they will release spores from aerial filaments when cultured. The cell wall contains mycolic acid so they are acid fast when stained. Clinically, Nocardia organisms cause pyogranulomatous diseases in most animal species.
