Anaemia
Anaemia refers to a reduction in the packed cell volume, haemoglobin concentration or total number of erythrocytes. It may be caused by infectious diseases of the red blood cells, haemorrhage or autoimmune responses directed at endogenous erythrocytes. The major causes are:
- Infectious Disease
- Equine Infectious Anaemia caused by EIA virus.
- Canine and feline infectious anemia caused by Mycoplasma haemocanis and Mycoplasma haemofelis respectively. Candidata M. haemominutum and M. turicensis may also cause anaemia in cats.
- Leptospira spp. may cause anaemia, usually when an animal is exposed to a non-host-adapted serovar.
- Babesia spp. may cause anaemia in dogs and cattle.
- Immune-mediated disease
- Haemorrhage
- Haemolysis
- Anaemia of Chronic Disease
