The University of Évora, the second oldest in Portugal, was founded in the 16th century (1559). It operated between 1559 and 1759. In this year and as a consequence of the Jesuit expulsion promoted by the Minister of the Kingdom Marquis of Pombal, it was closed. Then, the University of Évora resumed work in 1973 as a state-run university. 
It is subdivided in various schools, like the School of Sciences and Technology (Escola de Ciências e Tecnologia) in which the Veterinary Medicine Department (Departamento de Medicina Veterinária) is included.

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is located in Herdade da Mitra, which is a farm-like campus in the outskirts of Évora.
