Faculty of Veterinary Science was established in 1962 on the recommendation of National Commission of Food and Education when the Punjab Agricultural College and Research Institute was upgraded to the University of Agriculture, West Pakistan. It started its work with the Departments of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology, Veterinary Anatomy and Clinical Medicine and Surgery in the building of Oil Seed Technology situated in the Old Campus of the University which is now a days under the use of Laboratory High School. Later on the Departments of Veterinary Parasitology, and Veterinary Pathology and Bacteriology were also established. In 1962, according to an agreement with Washington State University, Pullman, USA, its staff came to the Faculty for teaching purpose. Dr. E. C. Stone, a well known educationist and veterinarian, became the first Dean of the Faculty.

After the establishment of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, a four year degree program of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) was started and first batch of 16 students was admitted to DVM class on the basis of F.Sc (pre medical) in 1963. At the same time Faculty also started postgraduate classes in all the disciplines. In 1965, Department of Veterinary Pathology and Bacteriology bifurcated into two independent departments i.e. Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Department of Veterinary Pathology. In 1968, Faculty produced first Ph.D scholar, Dr. Berjees Rehman, from the Department of Veterinary Parasitology. In 1971-72, the construction of the New Campus was completed and the Faculty was shifted to the new campus in1973 and is still working there. In 1971, another development in the Faculty was the  establishment of the Department of Animal Reproduction on the recommendation of FAO/SIDA Mission to Government of Pakistan. In 2003, four years degree program of DVM was upgraded to a five year composite degree program. In 2008-09, the prefix veterinary was omitted from the names of the Departments of the Faculty and medical students were allowed to take admission in postgraduate programs.

Currently there are seven departments of the Faculty including Departments of Anatomy, Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Microbiology, Parasitology, Pathology, Physiology and Pharmacology, and Theriogenology. Recently the Faculty has also started B.Sc (Hons) Microbiology, a four year degree program, under combined admission program of the University.

The Faculty of Veterinary Science consists of seven departments i.e. Anatomy, Clinical Medicine & Surgery, Microbiology, Parasitology, Pathology, Physiology and Pharmacology, and Theriogenology The Faculty has a track record of producing outstanding veterinary graduates serving the nation and worldwide. The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree program is constantly updated according to the requirements of the public and private sectors. Likewise, the research conducted by the Faculty and the students is mostly of applied nature and helping to meet the requirements of farmers and the other institutions. Although, there is always a room for improvement, the Faculty is well recognized for its sustained standards of excellence in helping the Poultry and Dairy Industry in Pakistan.

As a part of continuing education, Faculty organizes various specialized training program, like two-year diploma program to train “Veterinary Assistants”. Several refresher courses and short trainings are being offered to in-service veterinarians and para-veterinary staff. In addition to research by faculty, postgraduate students carry out supervised research in pre-clinical and clinical disciplines. A distinct contribution of the Faculty has been a regular publication and sustained international repute of the ‘Pakistan Veterinary Journal’ since 1981.

The teaching faculty, in recognition to their excellence in research and services to Livestock and Poultry Industry, have been decorated with prestigious awards like ‘Tamgha-e-Pakistan’, cash prize and medals from SAIC (SAARC Agricultural Information Centre) and Pakistan Academy of Medical Sciences. Several of teaching faculty has have been bestowed the Best teachers awards from Higher Education Commission, Government of Pakistan.
