History

Academic Program

RUSVM offers a curriculum, with innovative use of technologies and simulations, that provides the best possible opportunity for tomorrow’s veterinarians to pursue the many and varied careers available to them. Students receive seven semesters of integrated preclinical and clinical studies at the St Kitts campus, and one year of clinical training at the School’s affiliate veterinary hospitals in the United States. Sites in Canada and Europe are under negotiation. RUSVM is accredited by the AVMA Council on Education and the St. Christopher & Nevis Accreditation Board. Graduates are eligible to practice veterinary medicine in all United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico and as graduates of an AVMA accredited foreign school are not required to take foreign licensure examinations.

Research

Research focuses on key issues strategically relevant to One Health in tropical and developing countries – and includes zoonotic diseases, food safety and security, environmental health, and conservation medicine. Postgraduate programs are currently being developed in these areas. The School also has key clinical partners in the US, progressing novel studies in evidence-based medicine in pets. Research facilities have recently been expanded to include more than 4,000 square feet of laboratory space housing state-of-the-art equipment for surveillance and diagnostics, and pathology and histopathology.

The School’s research activities are supported by a variety of financial sources. To date, more than 35 research projects have been funded through extramural and intramural grants. All the projects support student involvement in research-assistant positions and for credits in Special Topics in Research Electives (examples of student participation include: WHO Geneva and Morris Animal Foundation.

Since 2006, the RUSVM Research Program has published more than 110 original peer review research articles and more than 90 presentations of original research have been given at scientific meetings. Research faculty collaborate with academic and non-academic organizations in many countries across the globe. The scope of the School’s research themes are broadened by these relationships with premier biomedical centers and research organizations.
