Introduction

The University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno (Veterinární a farmaceutická univerzita Brno) is the only university providing veterinary education in Czech Republic and one of two pharmaceutical schools. There are both Czech and English study programmes and the university supports international student mobility. International students come mainly from Slovakia, Greece, Cyprus, Middle East, Scandinavia and other regions.

History

The University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno was founded on 12 December 1918 as Veterinary University in Brno. The university's founder and first rector was Prof. Eduard Babák. From its inception, the university developed as a single-faculty university aimed at veterinary medicine. In 1975 two colleges were created: the College of General Veterinary Medicine (later renamed College of Veterinary Medicine) and the College of Veterinary Medicine - Food Hygiene (later renamed Veterinary Hygiene and Ecology). In 1990, the two colleges formed individual faculties - the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Veterinary Hygiene and Ecology. In 1991, a third faculty was added - the Faculty of Pharmacy, geared towards human and veterinary pharmaceutical sciences. Since 1994, the university has been officially called the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno.

Education

Both veterinary faculties provide several study programmes taught both in Czech and English:

  • 6-year study - Veterinary Medicine
  • 6-year study - Veterinary Hygiene and Ecology
  • 3-year bachelor study - Food Safety and Quality (and followed 2-year master study)
  • 3-year bachelor study - Animal Protection and Welfare

Furthermore there are about 20 combination of subjects taught in English.

Recently the university applies for international evaluation. Curriculum is changing completely in two years. New curriculum should be pointed to practical teaching (what is organized as so called „Day One Skills“ – student has got a checklist and carry out tasks). Modern approach supports medicine of small and exotic animals while livestock medicine decreases. Main interest is in surgery, orthopedics, imaging methods and internal medicine. Next trend is differentiation in teaching – more optional subjects. But as our rector says, graduates are multicompetent.

Further education is provided by The Institute of Life-Long Education and Informatics that organises additional courses and seminars for veterinary doctors and technicians. Also there is „The Third Age University“ that provides lectures for seniors, and „Vets for Pets“ programme – seminars for wide public.

Additional student activities and organizations:

  • International Veterinary Students Association Brno (IVSA Brno) with The Hippological Club
  • The Cynological Club
  • The Hunting Club
  • The University Sport Club
  • The Cabinet of History of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy

Research

All original papers are published in Acta Veterinaria journal. The university is joined to CEITEC project. There is cooperation with human medicine for searching new possibilities how to replace organs and tissues.

As a support of research, new buildings are built and organization is changing. Technological, financial and personal sources are connected to larger units. The university comes through complete restructuralization.
