The organism must be differentiated from Howell-Jolly bodies and other parasites. Due to the cyclic parasitaemia the organism causes, negative blood smears will not rule out the organism.

When the organism is not found a presumptive diagnosis may be made with clinical signs of reduced packed cell volume, and other causes of a regenerative anaemia ruled out.

Haematology will show a decreased packed cell volume and a regenerative anaemia.
