Introduction
- Tumours of the epidermis and inner hoof wall can cause lameness if they exert pressure on the sensitive tissue within the hoof capsule.
Diagnosis
Radiography
- Well defined semicircular radiolucent area on the distal margin of the distal phalanx
Treatment
- Complete excision of abnormal tissue, which may extend to the coronary band, can be curative. Best accomplished under general anaesthesia.
- Hoof capsule must be adequately stabilised during the period of re-growth.
- Potentially many months of restricted exercise and nursing care
Prognosis
- The hoof capsule may be permanently distorted and the new horn may lack full strength and resilience
