Pigmentation

  • Permanent abnormal discoloration


Melanosis

  • Individual parenchymal lobules are affected
  • Pigment is present in the alveolar walls of calves and lambs
  • Most likely congenital


Anthracosis

  • Diffuse greyish discoloration

Carbon in the connective tissue around airways and vessels, after being brought and deposited there - sequestration - by macrophages from the alveoli

  • Used to be seen in town-dwelling dogs and cats


Calcification

  • Generally associated with hypervitaminosis D or from ingested vitamin D analogues
  • Common sequel to uraemia in dogs and pulmonary necrosis
  • Lungs may fail to collapse on opening the thorax
