Introduction

Lublin is situated in the centre of the agricultural region of Poland. This localization enables an easy reach of patients and other biological materials, necessary for an adequate organization of the didactic process. Moreover, the localization of the Faculty within the city is an advantage for students and has allowed good integration and better organization of the didactic process. At present Faculty in Lublin is one of 4 Faculties of Veterinary Medicine in Poland.

History

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lublin (www.weterynaria.up.lublin.pl) was established in 1944 as one of the faculties belonging to University of Maria Skłodowska-Curie. It was located within the university campus together with other faculties, the main library, cultural centre and student houses. In the meantime, the structure of faculty was reorganized and finally, in 1995, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine became one of the Faculties at the Agricultural University in Lublin which lately was renamed to University of Life Sciences.

Education

Graduate education

High School Diploma (Matura) certificate allows for admission to enroll for the 1st year of studies of veterinary medicine in Lublin. Biology and chemistry should be chosen as additional subjects for exam. Faculty Admittance Commission is responsible for the procedure and the selection of candidates. Applicants are ranked in accordance to Matura points. The number of candidates is established every year by Faculty Council and Rector and varies between 120 and 150.


The studies of veterinary medicine at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lublin last 5.5 years (11 semesters) and are one step studies leading to the diploma of veterinary surgeon. Curriculum is based on regulations of the Faculty Council and EU directive requirements related to Day one skills. Systematic teaching (lectures and classes) takes place in winter semester starting 1st Oct and lasting 15 weeks. During the first three weeks in February students take exams, there is also a short break between the terms. The summer semester lasting 15 weeks starts at the end of February. Again, three weeks in June are devoted to exams. Students has 3 chances to take one exam. If they do not meet the requirements for the enrollment for the next year they are allowed to take the same year once again. Detailed procedures are described in the Regulations of studies. Each graduate obtains the diploma signed by the Rector and Dean, with the seal of University of Life Sciences in Lublin. The graduates planning to work as veterinary surgeons have to register at the regional Veterinary Medicine Chamber. That organization authorizes the graduates for veterinary practice and grants professional licenses.


Students are offered several organizations which actively participate in scientific and academic life of Faculty:

-Students Council -International Veterinary Students Association (IVSA) -Scientific Circle of Veterinary Surgeons -Choir -Folk Song and Dance Group ‘Jawor’
