Difficulties in Birth of an Oversized Calf,Copyright RVC 2008
  • Large offspring may pccur naturally, but is more common with Artificial Insemination with the semen of a large breed into a small dam.
  • Passage of the foetus through the birth canal is restricted. The oversized foetus presents three barriers to delivery:
    • Head
    • Shoulders
    • Hips

Treatment

  • Traction can be applied to assist delivery, but this carries the risk of pelvic fracture.
  • Caesarian

Large Offspring Syndrome

  • Only seems to arise with IVF treatment
  • Foetus and internal organs are enlarged
  • Musculoskeletal abnormalities
  • Increased post-partum abnormalities and mortality
