The acquisition of body heat from solar radiation. Sources of heat for captive herps include natural sunlight, 'full-spectrum' lights, heat lamps, and incandescent bulbs. Natural sunlight provides everything the herp needs from basking, including ultraviolet radiation for conversion of hormones such as cholecalciferol into the active form of vitamin D3.
