The structure and the teaching methods of this university were inspired by the work of its patron: Abel Salazar (physician, lecturer, researcher, writer and painter; 1889-1946).

The Veterinary Medicine degree became an Integrated Masters Degree in 2007 and students are currently taught in the following fields of veterinary medicine:
