Veterinary science is a significant medical branch of learning that offers prevention of diseases, fostering and remedy of medical issues associated with animals. Veterinary science plays a vital role in the protection of animal kingdom, the safeguarding of food sources for human consumption and minimizing the spread of diseases amongst animals and human beings. Many important medical developments have been made by veterinarians and physicians working together to find out the causes of human diseases in animal models and then applying such information back to human disease. Veterinarians are engaged in guarding human health by examining the animal inhabitants for zoonotic diseases - diseases that can be passed from animals to humans. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) is a professional degree and veterinarian is competent enough to practice (diagnose, treatment and management) in the field involving large and small animals. They are also trained and skilled to manage poultry and dairy farms and enhance the productivity. During training, a student is exposed to clinics in Medicine, Surgery and Animal Reproduction. Successful graduates can get employment in Livestock & Dairy Development departments in public sector in all the provinces of Pakistan. In this, they can perform their duties in the Veterinary Hospitals, Disease diagnosis laboratories, Breed Improvement, Livestock Farms, Extension services and Research. The main objective of the livestock sector is to ensure availability of milk, meat, eggs and livestock products to meet the requirements of growing population in Pakistan. Livestock present in Southern Punjab have a vital role in economy of the country. The economic survey of Pakistan shows that livestock play an important role in agriculture sector in Pakistan, as it accounts for 51.8 % share in agriculture and contribute about 11.3 % of the GDP in the country. Keeping in view the soaring demands of animal protein sources (milk, meat and eggs) and insufficient skillful manpower in the country, the college was established in 2006 as one of the constituent colleges of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. By now, the college has completed nine years of its successful academic sessions by offering a five-year composite degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). The incumbent students are able to interact with a highly qualified faculty, staff and fellow students in a conducive environment for studying the professional degree.
