The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Belgrade is the largest veterinary school in Serbia, with a long tradition and a renowned influence in the region. It is situated near the centre of Belgrade several hundred metres from the central Slavia sqare towards Autokomanda square, in the proximity of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry. When founded, over seventy five years ago, it was located at the edge of a fast developing city. In the not so distant past, some steps have been initiated towards its dislocation to a more remote area.

About Us

Although the idea of founding the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine arose at the beginning of the twentieth century, the institution was established upon the Declaration of the Department of Education Act No 30281/36 in 1936. It was at that point that the newly founded institution was named the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Belgrade. On August 19th, 1936. the first professors were elected and the courses started. The professors were mainly chosen amongst the lecturers of the Faculty of Medicine and/or the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. The First Dean was Professor Živojin Đorđević, PhD. A total of 149 students were enrolled in 1936 Class, and the classes were held at the premises of the Faculty of Medicine. During the first year vacancies were opened for professors, associate professors, assistant professors and assistants. Many eminent experts made a huge contribution to the development of the Faculty and were consequently appointed, amongs them professors Ilija Đuričić, PhD, Antonije Vuković, PhD; Čedomir Simić, PhD; Jovan Dimić, PhD; Vladeta Simić, PhD, etc.

Just before the outbreak of the Second World War the construction began on the now present Faculty building. The construction and classes were halted in 1941. The construction site then reopened in 1946, so that by 1948 most of the Faculty facilities, including some of the clinics and the basic infrastructure for research activity was also provided.
