The family Uropeltidae consists of shield-tailed snakes and Asian pipe snakes. They are small burrowing snakes from south east Asia. There are two subfamilies: Cylindropheinae (Asian pipe snakes) and Uropeltinae (shield-tailed snakes). There are ten genera. The left lung is absent or very small and teeth are lacking on the maxilla.
