Forestomach - Pathology

The majority of the ruminant diet is composed of complex plant carbohydrates, for example cellulose. In the rumen, these are broken down by fermentation by bacteria and protozoa. The fermentation process produces 1-2 litres of gas each minute which is eliminated via the oesphagus by eructation.
