The cervix retains the foetus in the uterus.

The cervix is composed of:

  • Collagen fibre bundles
  • Proteoglycan Matrix: protein core with glycosaminoglycan branches

Connective tissue resists stretch, allowing distension of the uterine body whilst maintaining the cervix in a closed state.
