Introduction

History

In 1948 the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine was established. The first class consisted of 42 male students.

Education

Academic Departments within the school of veterinary medicine include Anatomy, Physiology & Cell Biology, Medicine & Epidemiology, Molecular Biosciences, Pathology Microbiology & Immunology, Population Health & Reproduction, and Surgical & Radiological Sciences.

Degrees offered include the 4-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, the Master of Preventative Veterinary Medicine program, the DVM/PhD dual degree, the Master of Public Health degree (offered jointly with the UC Davis School of Medicine), and the largest hospital residency program in the United States (including 32 specialties).

Additional aspects of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine include 1) the Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center in Tulare for dairy and herd health medicine, 2) the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System for veterinary diagnosis, disease surveillance, and research within the state of California 3) the Veterinary Medicine Extension which provides education and research support to components of animal agriculture within the state of California, 4) the UC Veterinary Medical Center in San Diego which has programs in wildlife, zoological and ecosystem health, and comparative medical research, and 5) the Centers of Excellence, which are research centers for various subjects.
