The term “adder” is a term for snakes in several families. The most common “adder” is the common adder or the common European viper (Vipera berus). Other vipers are also sometimes referred to as adders and many Viperidae snakes in Africa are called adders. Most adders belong to Viperidae but some Elapidae and Colubridae are also referred to as adders including the Australian death adder (Acanthophis spp.). Hognose snakes (Heterodon spp.) may also be called adders.
