The faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Agrarian University of Havana originated from the University of Havana with more than 100 years since its foundation. It produces doctors in veterinary medicine and zootechnics with abilities in medicine and animal production. It is named after the hero and martyr Fructuoso Rodríguez Pérez.
La facultad de Medicina Veterinaria de la Universidad Agraria de La Habana proviene de la Universidad de Habana con más de 100 años de fundación. Produce doctores en medicina veterinaria y zootecnia con habilidades de medicina y producción animal. Es nombrado del héroe y mártir Fructuoso Rodríguez Pérez.
About Us
The Agrarian University of Havana was founded on 7 September, 1976 with the name Higher Institute of Agricultural Sciences of Havana. It is bounded by Km. 23 y medio, of the National Highway and 4 Km of the Municipality of San José de las Lajas. It is the oldest Cuban Agricultural universities, with its roots en the University of Havana, in the School of Agricultural Sciences in 5Ta de los Molinos, which pertains to the Faculties of Agronomy and Veterinary Science. In 1972 both faculties were transferred to la Finca Guayabal, which is now an educational unit, with the objective of widening the scope of students, putting them directly in the environment thus increasing their practical skills. It is strategically located close to the Institute of Animal Science, the National Center of Animal Health and the National Institute of Agricultural Science thus providing complete scientific education for the formation of integral professionals with the capacity to confront new challenges. Initially it began with two careers: Veterinary Medicine and Agricultural Mechanization.
La Universidad Agraria de La Habana su fundó el 7 de septiembre de 1976, con el nombre de Instituto Superior de Ciencias Agropecuarias de La Habana. Está enclavada en el Km. 23 y medio, de la Autopista Nacional y a 4 Km. del municipio San José de las Lajas. Es la más antigua de las Universidades Agropecuarias cubanas, y sus raíces están en la Universidad de La Habana, en la Escuela de Ciencias Agropecuarias en la 5Ta de los Molinos, a la que pertenecían las Escuelas de Agronomía y de Veterinaria. Cumpliendo con el principio estudio trabajo, en el año 1972 se trasladan ambas facultades a la Finca Guayabal, hoy Unidad Docente, por la necesidad de ampliar los horizontes de los estudiantes, ponerlos en contacto directo con el medio, además, se consideraban los estudios de Agronomía como empíricos por la poca práctica en el terreno y el país después del triunfo de la Revolución precisaba una agricultura científica. Se escoge al territorio de San José de las Lajas por su auge agropecuario, ya se encontraba en el territorio el Instituto de Ciencia Animal, el Centro Nacional de Sanidad Animal y el Instituto Nacional de Ciencia Agrícola, conformando un Complejo Científico Docente para la formación de profesionales integrales, capaces de enfrentar los nuevos desafíos. Inicialmente se contaba con dos carreras: Medicina Veterinaria y la facultad de Mecanización Agropecuaria.
Education
The Faculty offers the Doctor in Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics (DMVZ) and has professors of various specialties with many years of experience. There exists master programs in preventative medicine, animal reproduction and veterinary pathology (MSc). Doctorates in Veterinary Science are done by investigations and dissertation (PhD).
La Facultad ofrece el Doctor en Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia (MVZ) y hay profesores de varias especialidades con muchos años de experiencia. Existen programas de maestria en medicina preventiva, reproducción animal y patología veterinaria (MSc). El Doctor en Ciencia se hace através de investigaciones y una desertación (DrC).
Current Research
The Training Center of Sustainable Agriculture provides learning about sustainable agriculture in general and how it is practiced in Cuba in particular. The Institute of Animal Science, the National Centre of Animal Health, the National Institute of Agricultural Science, the National Institute of Agriculture Science, the Center for the Production of Laboratory Animals, the Center of Agrarian and Rural Development, the Institute of de Fundamental Investigations in Tropical Agriculture among others facilitate students to conduct investigations of high quality.
El Centro de Estudios de Agricultura Sostenible (CEAS) provee enseñanza en agricultura sostenible en general y como se practica en Cuba principalmente. El Instituto de Ciencia Animal (ICA), el Centro Nacional de Sanidad Animal (CENSA), el Instituto Nacional de Ciencia Agrícola (INCA), el Centro de Producción de Animales del Laboratorio (CENPALAB), el Centro de Desarrollo de Agrario y Rural (CEDAR), el Instituto de Investigaciones Fundamentales en Agricultura Tropical (INIFAT) entre otros facilitan los estudiantes para elaborar investigaciones de alta calidad.
Clinical Services
The faculty has a clinic in the Guayabal unit that offers free services to the public. Students also works as volunteers in municipal clinics in the country.
La facultad tiene un clínico en la Unidad Guayabal que ofrece servicios al público de forma gratuita. Estudiantes también trabajan voluntariamente en clínicos municipales en el país.
