Introduction

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at LMU Munich is the only university veterinary training and research institution in southern Germany. Veterinary medicine is a highly popular field. The extensive curriculum not only includes basic science subjects but also focuses on clinical and paraclinical training in addition to food hygiene and veterinary public health. Graduates are therefore qualified to take responsibility for both animals and people in many spheres.

History

In 1790 the elector of Palatinate-Bavaria, Karl-Theodor, enacted the establishment of a veterinary school close to the famous English Gardenin Munich. The first professor and also manager of the school was Anton Will, a medical officer of health, who could actually be called the real founder, because he had convinced the elector of the necessity of controlling cattle plagues in order to improve stock breeding. The three educational objectives were: controlling and preventing cattle plagues, educating skilled veterinarians and training skilled blacksmiths for the cavalry.

Through the following years the curriculum grew and the school changed its name from veterinary school and central veterinary school to royal veterinary school. In 1910 it was the first to put through an autonomous right to award doctorates and also to establish the title Dr. med. vet., which is still being used in Germany.

In 1914 the school was integrated into the Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität and thus became the first independant faculty of a universtity in Germany.

Through the second world war many buildings were destroyed, but already in 1945 the school was reopened and the first lectures started again. The reconstruction lasted until 1965 and besides new buildings the school also instituted new professorships, to keep up with the increasing specializations in veterinary medicine teaching and research.

By now the faculty consists of 15 institutes respecitvely clinics and the experimental and teaching farm in Oberschleißheim (Lehr- und Versuchsgut Oberschleißheim).

Education

The study of veterinary medicine is uniformly regularized in Germany. The medical act for veterinarians includes the structure of the curriculum and the exams which have to be passed.

The whole study takes 11 semesters and can be divided into the

  • basic preclinical scheduling (physics, chemistry, zoology, botanics, anatomy, biochemistry, histology, embryology, genetics, physiology and animal breeding) which concludes with exams right after the second and fourth semester, and the
  • clinical studies (surgery, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, radiology, internal medicine, animal husbandry, animal hygienics, propaedeutics, pharmaceutical law, narcotics law, bacteriology, mycology, virologic studies, procreation, milk, dietetics, epizootics, epidemiology, anaesthesiology, meat hygienics, bird diseases, veterinary law, ethology and animal protection).

Both parts consist of theoretical lectures as well as hands-on training in smaller classes.

In Munich, the 8th and 9th semester are reserved for the clinical rotation, in which students are trained hands-on in each of the specialized clinics of the faculty. This includes the clinic for ruminants (Klinik für Wiederkäuer), the medical clinic for small animals (Medizinische Kleintierklinik), the surgical and gynecological clinic for small animals (Chirurgische und gynäkologische Kleintierklinik), the clinic for horses (Pferdeklinik), the clinic for birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes (Klinik für Vögel, Reptilien, Amphibien und Fische), the clinic for pigs (Klinik für Schweine) and the department for hygienics and food (Department für Hygiene und Technologie der Lebensmittel).

Addintionally, there are several internships each student has to fulfill in different spheres of veterinary medicine.

Finally, after the 11th semester, the study concludes with the final university examination, also called state examination, after which the veterinarian can apply for "Approbation", the medical license.
