Introduction
Welcome To MAFSU
Our mission is to ensure enlightenment and empowerment of students by imparting advanced knowledge in the fields of animal, dairy and fishery sciences by adopting innovative, efficient and effective strategies. We will strive for creating rural employment, economic prosperity and well-being of the resource-poor farming community in the state through viable and vibrant research and impact making extension education services and growth oriented and faculty - friendly practices. We will contribute to public health research and practices with an ultimate aim to enrich human nutrition and welfare. By using the latest technologies, we will make education meaningful, relevant, universally accessible, intellectually stimulating and professionally challenging.
Education
The university was carved out of the four Agricultural Universities in the State by transferring five Veterinary colleges, one postgraduate Institute and one dairy technology college, a dairy technology institute and a diploma institute. MAHARASHTRA ANIMAL & FISHERY SCIENCES UNIVERSITY Near Hanuman Temple, Futala Road, Telankhedi, Nagpur-440 001 The Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU) was formally notified on November 17th, 2000 and was established under the State Act No. 1998 (MAH.XVII of 1998) on December 03rd, 2000 with its headquarter at Nagpur. The University has been carved out of the four Agriculture Universities in the state by transferring five Veterinary Colleges, one Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary & Animal Sciences and one Dairy Technology College.
Although the University is in its infancy, the constituent colleges were quite old. Thus beginning with the five Veterinary Colleges, one Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary & Animal Sciences and one Dairy Technology College at different geographical locations of the state in December 2000, University made a commendable progress in developing Fishery Faculty and strengthening Dairy Technology Faculty by establishing two new Fishery College at Nagpur & Udgir and one Dairy Technology College at Udgir. Besides ten colleges in three faculties, Director of Instructions, Director of Research and Director of Extension & Training, the University has a well developed Students Welfare Section, University Library, Bio-informatics Center and training and placement centers.

Thus beginning with the five Veterinary Colleges, one Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary & Animal Sciences and one Dairy Technology College at different geographical locations of the state in December 2000, University made a commendable progress in developing Fishery Faculty and strengthening Dairy Technology Faculty by establishing two new Fishery College at Nagpur & Udgir and one Dairy Technology College at Udgir. Besides ten colleges in three faculties, Director of Instructions, Director of Research and Director of Extension & Training, the University has a well developed Students Welfare Section, University Library, Bio-informatics Center and training and placement centers. With the new concepts of research and extension responsibility, the University plans to initiate and coordinate research projects with the other Universities, institutions of ICAR.
Each college has some highly specialized and well developed departments which include India’s first Veterinary Nuclear Medicine Center (VNMC) at Mumbai, Embryo Transfer Technology Laboratory and Mineral & Hormonal Assay Laboratory at Akola, Swine Fever Surveillance Center at Nagpur etc. The University draws its major financial support from the State Government’s Annual Grants for meeting its expenses on salaries and recurring and non-recurring expenses relating to the plan and non-plan subjects. In addition, University also receives a major financial support from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research as development grants being a State Agriculture University (SAU). The research projects are supported by DBT, DSIR, MoFPI, DST, NABARD, Pharmaceuticals companies.

Prof. A. K Misra graduated (BVSc & AH) from Mathura Veterinary College in 1979 and obtained MVSc and PhD degrees in Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics from the same college in 1981 and 1996. Prof. Misra secured II position in order of merit in all the 4 years of BVSc & AH and was awarded ‘University Silver Medal’. He topped the University in MVSc and was awarded ‘Chancellor’s Gold Medal’. His PhD work on embryo biotechnology in buffalo was adjudged as the outstanding post-graduate research work, for which he received ‘Jawaharlal Nehru Award’ of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.
During his career in research, education and extension, Prof. Misra worked in several capacities including Director, Project Directorate on Cattle (ICAR), Meerut; Professor, Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar; General Manager (CEO) of Sabarmati Ashram Gaushala (SAG), a unit managed by the National Dairy Development Board. Besides, working as the Additional General Manager, Project Manager, Manager (ET/SS/ONBS), Deputy Manager, Asst. Executive, following recruitment as Trainee Executive by the NDDB. Prof. Misra has the unique distinction of working with ‘excellence’ in the corporate body/ industry, state agricultural university and an ICAR institute.
Prof. Misra has been involved in the development of embryo transfer and frozen semen technology in cattle and buffalo; and produced the first buffalo calf by successful freezing and thawing of embryos, non-surgical and surgical embryo transfer in India/Asia and was involved in the production of first buffalo calf through OPU-IVF in India. His team also successfully demonstrated vitrification of immature buffalo oocytes for the first time. In association with NDDB, he successfully implemented ONBS project for the first time in Asia; and produced a record 11 calves following transfer of 15 embryos, in to 14 recipients (78.6% conception), collected from a single flushing of a cow in a village, which was widely acclaimed by the media and the Prime Minister. Prof. Misra has taught 5 UG and 10 PG courses and guided many students for their Master/Doctoral research, authored/ edited 7 books/book chapters, 6 manuals, besides many reports. He has published 70 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals (International- 30, National- 40), besides 4 popular articles and 130 scientific papers/ lectures presented in national/international conferences/seminar/ training programmes (including 17 International and 56 National Key Note/ Invited /Lead Papers/ Lectures). He has been the Member of the Editorial Board of ‘Journal of Buffalo Science’ (international) and Indian Journal of Animal Science, and has reviewed research papers of the journals-Theriogenology (USA), Livestock Science (The Netherlands), Buffalo Journal (Thailand) and a large number of Indian Journals. He has also been used as consultant/ resource person by the FAO, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna-Austria, Integrated Watershed Development Project Hills-II (Kandi), Solan (H.P.), a World Bank Project, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mumbai, Uttaranchal Livestock Development Board, Dehradun, besides advising several state/ central government and non-government organizations as Chairman/ Member of several national/ international committees related to Dairying/ Animal Reproduction/ Embryo Biotechnology.
He has visited many countries including USA, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Denmark, Brazil, United Kingdom, Canada, France, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan as Visiting Professor/ Invited/Sponsored Speaker/Chairman of the Session or other professional work. He has been expert in the selection committee/ assessment of ASRB, IVRI, Public Service Commission Uttarakhand and a large number of Agricultural/ Veterinary universities. He has been honoured with ‘Rafi Ahmad Kidwai Award: 2005-06’, ‘Jawaharlal Nehru Award -1997’ of ICAR, ‘Fellow- National Academy of Veterinary Sciences (India) 1999-2000’, ‘Fellow-Indian Society for the Study of Animal Reproduction (ISSAR)-2009’, ‘CR Sane Oration Award-2010’ of ISSAR, ‘Nils Lagerlof Memorial Award (1993) of ISSAR’,besides many other awards. As a sportsman, he represented Cricket and Hockey teams of the CSA University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur (UP) and was Captain of the Hockey Team of the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry Mathura.
