History

ORIGIN OF THE FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE OF THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SAN MARCOS The origins of the creation of study centers to train veterinarians in Peru can be separated into two lines, civil and military. It may indicate that the civil line starts when in 1901 President Eduardo Lopez of Roman brought the Belgian mission, composed of four Ing. Agronomists led by Jorge Vanderghem, from the Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, to organize National School of Agronomy and Veterinary. This mission also consisted of Dr. Arthur Declerck Belgian veterinarian from the Veterinary School of Brussels (Cureghem). The National School of Agriculture and Veterinary (ENAV) began in 1902 with 56 students, for training Agronomists and Veterinarians in Fundo Santa Beatriz occupied by the Army Cavalry. The first director was Eng. Jorge Vanderghem. This gave the title School of Agricultural and Veterinary until 1932 In 1910 the government hired two Italian veterinarians: Dr. Luis Macagno that boosted agricultural programs for 28 years and really study our livestock and animal health; and Dr. Marino Tabusso organized by the Laboratory of Microbiology, Sera and Vaccines (National Institute of Animal Biology of the Ministry of Agriculture). The 40s was a decisive decade for veterinary medicine in Peru. Thus, in 1941, the 9359 Education Act strengthened the obligation to create this section in the ENAV. In 1943 the operation of the section with nine students started in a selection made about 28 applicants. However, these students did not finish their studies because in 1944 they went to the National School of Veterinary Science.

Military Line In 1905, with the arrival of the Third Military Mission French, the Veterinary Service of the Army was created and in 1906, within the Service, School Mariscalería Army which is 36 Masters Marshals Herradores with knowledge in veterinary nursing creates and shoeing horses. Furthermore, in 1910 the official title of Veterinary Reserve was created from senior students of ENAV, Agronomists and Veterinarians, First Sergeants Masters Marshals Herradores those who are trained with intensive courses in medicine and minor surgery . In 1940 the Veterinary Section of the Military School of Chorrillos as President of Peru Manuel Prado Ugarteche and in 1943 from the Veterinary Section, the Military School of Veterinary Science, first technical institute of higher learning, is created under the leadership is created Dr. Aurelio Malaga. This school graduated the first and only promotion Veterinary Alfereces. Furthermore they began their studies three classes, passing these to the National School of Veterinary Science. In 1944se created the National School of Veterinary Science, under the direction of Dr. Aurelio Malaga which joins the two lines proposed civil and military, this school serves students of the Military School of Veterinary Science and the National School of Agriculture and Veterinary. . By law 10246 of March 11 de1946, the National School of Veterinary Science becomes Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of San Marcos. The Rector of San Marcos was Dr. Luis Alberto Sanchez, and the first dean was Dr. Joseph Santivañez. Another important milestone of veterinary medicine in the country is the start of formal graduate and postgraduate, and this came in 1989 with master's programs in Animal Health and Production and Animal Reproduction. Two decades after the creation of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the National University of San Marcos, other faculties, reaching now 23 between schools and colleges, some of them giving the title of veterinarians and others to be created veterinary surgeons and animal health. In the past decade they have created 13 of the 23 existing ones, of which five have been installed in the capital which are all private.
