SQPs
Introduction
SQPs, or 'suitable qualified persons' are trained by the Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority (AMTRA) and, after passing the appropriate examinations are considered to be qualified to dispense medication in the relevant categories (POM - VPS and NFA-VPS).
The qualification consists of a base unit plus modules that cover POM-VPS and NFA-VPS for specific sectors of the animal medicines available. CPD for qualified SQPs is compulsory.
SQP Modules
- R-SQP: all VPS medicines
- C-SQP: companion animal VPS medicines
- K-SQP: farm and companion VPS medicines
- E-VPS: equine and companion animal VPS medicines
- G-SQP: farm animal and equine VPS medicines
- J-SQP: equine VPS medicines
- L-SQP: farm animal VPS medicines
Exemptions
Qualified veterinary nurses are able to apply for exemptions from some of the training.
Additional Information
The purpose of introducing SQPs is to increase the knowledge and professionalism of personnel handling veterinary medicines. The training of a SQP includes identifying when an animal needs to be referred to a veterinary surgeon before receiving any medication. Medication can be prescribed by an SQP and given to an owner by another competent person who must advise them on the safe use of that medication, go through the contra-indications and assess that the owner is competent and intending to use the medication for its authorised use.
