The Shivamogga Veterinary College, Shivamogga started functioning from the academic year 2006-07. The mandate of the college is teaching, research and extension in the field of veterinary and animal sciences. The primary object of this college is to produce qualified and competent Veterinarians who could help in increasing livestock productivity in the state, in particular and in the country, in general. The mission of the college is to strive hard and provide leadership in teaching, research and extension education services related to veterinary and animal sciences. The college will keep in pace with the new frontier of science and contemporary developments which are socially and technically relevant to the society.

Shivamogga is endowed with rich natural resources including animal genetic resources, heritage of culture, traditional and social systems and is being considered as lead centre in education activities. The college has been setup in an area of 157 acres at Sominakoppa village coming under Urban Development Authority of Shivamoga. In this college, adequate measures are taken to assure quality education, as the college is totally governed by the requirements of Veterinary Council of India and guidelines of the KVAFSU, Bidar.

The lecture halls with facilities of audio-visual systems like overhead projectors, slide projectors and multimedia using computer assisted instructions to impart quality education. In addition, top quality laboratories have also been created with latest need based modern equipments for practical training of students in each subject/discipline. In 2015, the post-graduate courses leading to Master’s degree (M V Sc) were introduced.

Presently the Staff and students are working with ICAR sponsored research project and Government of Karnataka sponsored research project.
All animal experiments are conducted as per the Committee for the Purpose of Control And Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) guidelines and after approval from the Institutional animal Ethics Committee approval.
Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology, Pathology, Public health & Epidemiology, Microbiology and Medicine are drawn together in the Obscure diseases research centre (ODRC), opened in 2017 and investigate on obscure diseases in Karnataka.

The College is regularly conduct training programmes in the area of clinical pharmacology & toxicology, clinical pathology, as well as extends advisory service to veterinarians in the State departments.
