The Colubridae are a complex group and tend to come in all shapes, sizes and colours. All lack a pelvic girdle, a functional left lung and a coronoid bone. There are nine subfamilies:

*Colubrinae

*Homalopsinae

*Xenoderminae

*Calamariinae

*Pareatinae

*Lamprophinae

*Pseudoxenodontinae

*Natricinae

*Xenodontinae
