**Organisms present in erythrocytes of Giemsa-stained blood smears
**Immunofluorescence of blood smears, PCR, serology
*Treatment and control
**Long-acting oxytetracycline or imidocarb early in the disease
**Supportive therapy
**Vaccination of animals being introduced into an endemic region
