As wells as permitting visualisation of the lesion, endoscopy allows biopsies of the mass to be taken. Open proctoscopes are more useful than fibreoptic scopes for colorectal lesions as direct visualisation of the mass is possible and deeper biopsies can be obtained. Nevertheless, endoscopic biopsy obtains only small superficial samples and so there can be significant variation in the interpretation of the findings.
