Faecal cytology may reveal red blood cells, occasional white blood cells, ''[[:Category:Enteropathogenic and Enterotoxaemic Clostridia|Clostridium perfringens]]'' spores or enterotoxin.  Clostridium perfringens spores or enterotoxin can be found in a normal dog, therefore care has to be taken not to over-interpret this.
