The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice is the only institution in the Slovak Republic offering higher education in the veterinary field. It has been providing veterinary education in English for 15 years. Nowadays the University offers two English study programmes: 6-year degree programme for secondary-school graduates and 4-year degree post-BSc. programme for bachelors in agricultural, veterinary or biological sciences, both leading to the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).

Education

The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice provides education within the framework of the General Veterinary Medicine Study Program, delivered in English in two different courses, both leading to DVM:

  1. 6-year study. Applicants who graduated from secondary school are admitted to the 1st year of this 6-year course after passing the entrance exam.
  2. Post-bachelor study. Admission to this course is subject to successful completion of the 1st level of higher education, i.e. Bachelor study, for example Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Bachelor of Life Sciences.

The University is accredited both by EAEVE & RCVS

The profile of the graduate is aimed mostly at specific activities in the field of state administration, as a private veterinary doctor, in the field of laboratory practice, private sphere of agriculture, food industry, pharmacy, in education, scientific and research sphere and in environmental protection.

The program prioritises theoretical and practical knowledge of specific clinical subjects according to animal species and from the point of view of internal, infectious, invasive diseases and toxic and metabolic disorders and impairment of organism by radiation and other unfavorable effects of the environment.

The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice has the following additional centres for practical teaching (not including farms):

  • The Riding Club where equestrianism is taught. Practical exercises related to the training and diseases of horses take place in the riding area, which holds racing horses, show-jumpers and eventers. Of particular interest are the vaulting and dressage groups.
  • The Aqua-Terra Club. This club is for students interested in the rearing of reptiles and aquarium fish. It is attractive and often visited by junior-school students.
  • The Cynological Club is divided into two parts: guardian dogs training (obedience training, tracking, defence) and hunting dog training. Students can train their dogs in the cynological club area. The number of members is rising rapidly every year.
  • The Flora Club members deal with plant growing. The club is situated at the residence halls.

Current Research

Folia Veterinaria is journal published by the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice, the Slovak Republic, and is issued quarterly and distributed worldwide. Original research papers on all aspects of veterinary science together with clinical case studies, notes and short communications, review articles, and correspondence are welcomed.
