Introduction

In Niterói, UFF and its various campuses merge with the geography of the city, located in various neighborhoods - Centro, São Domingos, Ingá, Santa Rosa, Vital Brasil - and incorporated into the routine of the residents. The university is the city and the city is the Bay of Guanabara: UFF integrates the urban landscape. There is no doubt that the UFF and Niterói formed a successful partnership.

But in 1961, the newly created Uferj had only 60 teachers, 170 staff and 3000 students, cjrrently, the UFF corresponds to a population of 60,180 people: 3,078 teachers, 4,695 technical and administrative staff, and 26,154 distance undergraduate students, 4,408 undergraduate, 5,583 graduate strictly and 16,262 graduate lato sensu (source: Siape and STI / UFF - data collected on 21/10/2010).

This universe is equivalent to 94 undergraduate courses, 76 graduate programs stricto sensu , 45 masters and 31 doctoral degrees, 161 postgraduate courses lato sensu, 115 coursework and five professional masters , scattered Niterói and 13 municipalities of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The university also has an experimental core Iguaba Grande and a school farm in Cachoeiras de Macacu. There are 32 teaching units, four poles inside, 27-pole distance learning (ODL) and an advanced unit in Oriximiná, State of Pará

UFF has a central library (Gragoatá), sector 23 libraries, 349 laboratories, 437 classrooms, nine lecture theaters, the Antônio Pedro University Hospital (HUAP) with 276 beds, the University College of Pharmacy and application (University College Geraldo Reis ).

In the cultural area, the university incorporates the UFF Publisher, the Icaraí Bookstore, UFF Cine Art, theater, art gallery, the National Symphony Orchestra, the ancient music ensemble and String Quartet.

History

After its foundation it worked initially in the Botanical Garden of Niterói, in the extinct College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine of Ministry of Agriculture headquarters. Later, it was moved to a building on Rua Visconde de Rio Branco. In 1939, the renowned scientist Dr. Vital Brazil donated, by deed, for construction of the School headquarters taking, with the express permission of Fluminense Government, an area of 8,800 square meters of land carved out of the Vital Brazil Institute, on Rua Vital Brazil Filho, 64, Santa Rosa, Niterói.

Education

The undergraduate degree in Veterinary Medicine at Universidade Federal Fluminense aims to train professionals capable of working in Veterinary Preventive Medicine and Public Health , Animal Pathology , Internal Medicine , Surgery , Animal Reproduction , Hygiene and Technology of Animal Products and Animal production ( Animal Science ) . The course consists of 57 compulsory courses , with a minimum duration of 10 periods in full regime. Initially, most of the subjects of study comprises Valonguinho campus and Biomedical Institute , though some of them are already taught in the Faculty of Veterinary Science, the Vital Brazil campus . This is a strong point of the new curriculum, it already puts students in touch with the professors and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine from the start of their graduation. Gradually most of the disciplines becomes taken in the Veterinary campus until the end of the course , all the materials are routed there. In addition to the compulsory subjects , the grid is also composed of 50 electives, enabling a higher academic learning in specific areas within the agency of veterinary and / or courses from other undergraduate medical courses . It is required that each student has a minimum number of credits for these types of courses that can be formed . During his graduation , students go through two remarkable experiences that are Zootechnical Week and Week of Reproduction . These students will learn the practical field of animal husbandry production and reproduction of these animals , spending the whole weekend at the School Farm in Cachoeiras de Macacu and visiting other farms . The last part of the course is dedicated to conducting mandatory stages ( Supervised ) , where each student prepares an individual plan of activities according to their interest in professional work and may be performed on the stage itself at UFF or at other accredited institutions. At the end of the course the student is formed Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and is able to record the Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine to act as veterinarian .

The Dean of Research, Graduate Studies and Innovation (PROP) is the central body of the Universidade Federal Fluminense Responsible for the coordination and supervision of research activities and graduate.

Aims: Propose and promote policy research and graduate of the Universidade Federal Fluminense , employing this action strategies aimed at promoting debate, discussion , recognition , reformulation and / or resizing ; Deploy and develop policy research and postgraduate approved by the competent Superior Councils ; Develop , facilitate and coordinate scientific initiation programs ; Promote the specific spheres activities integration of its competence with undergraduate education and extension ; Promote efforts with public and private , national and international bodies, aimed at raising funds for the development or implementation of research activities and graduate ; Extend the internal and external community , in the form of courses and special services , teaching activities postgraduate and research results .

The Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Science is a quarterly publication of the Veterinary School of the Universidade Federal Fluminense, which aims to publish scientific research on veterinary medicine and related areas. Every Brazilian or foreign researcher may publish in the journal, since their work is unpublished and not submitted simultaneously to another journal and has been approved by the Scientific Committee of the Editorial Board . Clinical

The Professor Firmino Marsico Filho Veterinary Medicine Hospital (HUVET) is an extension project of Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). The Veterinary Hospital is a Veterinary Clinical Pathology Department project and has been prepared by the institution professors, so that besides teaching through practice, the community animals could be served.

The Huvet serves basically domesticated animals, particularly dogs and cats. There are also care of domesticated wild animals. In the hospital radiographic laboratorial exams as ultrasonography and electrocardiogram, acupuncture, physiotherapy, x-ray exams and vaccinations are also taken.

About 10% of visits is intended for homeless animals, in addition, a selection is made for people in need, so that their animals can take a free treatment.
