Primary tumours are rare: Mesothelioma, Lipoma. Secondary tumours are uncommon.
- Transcoelomic spread, direct implantation
- Ovarian, bile duct carcinomas, pancreatic and intestinal adenocarcinomas, gastric squamous cell carcinomas or any other abdominal neoplasia
- Widespread metastases on peritoneum = carcinosis
- Lipomas - horses
- Arise from mesentery (particularly in horses), omentum (in dogs)
- Can become large and pedunculated (horses)
- May lead to strangulation of intestine
- On cut surface may become friable and necrotic with only the superficial surface remaining viable
Secondary tumours
- Uncommon
- Transcoelomic spread, direct implantation
- Ovarian, bile duct carcinomas, pancreatic and intestinal adenocarcinomas, gastric squamous cell carcinomas or any other abdominal neoplasia
- Widespread metastases on peritoneum = carcinosis
- Carcinomas

- Must be differentiated from mesotheliomas
- More common than sarcomas
- Sometimes very scirrhous
- May resemble chronic peritonitis when present with ascites
- Absence of adhesions
