About Us
The school was created by Claude Bourgelat and established in 1766 in the small hamlet of Alfort, two leagues from Paris. During its two and a half centuries of existence, it has developed over the 11 hectares that formed its original site and is now at the heart of the town of Maisons-Alfort (Val de Marne).
New themes has led it to establish, at a distance from its main site, in cooperation with the regions host, two centers devoted to large animals medicine.
In 1975 it acquired the domain of Champignelles, in the Yonne, to create an application center for farm animals. Herds of cattle, sheep, an ultra modern deer farm, student accomodations and a training center, Champignelle is a unique place where students can be trained in small groups.
The CIRALE, Centre for Research and Imaging of Equine Locomotion Disorders , was built from 1999 in Dozulé (Calvados) and is a focal point of global locomotion pathology in horses. Expert clinicians use high level imaging equipment and collaborate with top teams and the renowned research they conduct make it a unique training facility, serving students, veterinarians and horse owners.
Education
This degree enables the graduates to practice in France and throughout the European Union: ENVA (Alfort veterinary school) is on the list of relevant European institutions recognized by the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE).
The course to become a veterinarian takes seven years of study after the baccalaureate.
- two years before the entrance examination (national)
- four years of basic training (basic training): 3 years or lectures and a year of clinical rotations
- one year of pre-speciaization
After its fifth year in veterinary school, the student submits a thesis of veterinary practice that gives the title of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
Current Research
The structuring of Research in ENVA allows the establishment of several joint research units (UMR : Unite mixte de recherche), Units Under Contract (USC) and internal units. The first two types of structure involve the collaboration of several public institutions (INRA, AFSSA, INSERM) or universities.
Therefore many laboratories have facilities for teaching and research students.
- Five joint research units
- Functional Genetics Unit and Medical
- Unit of Molecular Biology and Immunology parasitic and fungal (BIPAR)
- Virology
- Unit of Developmental Biology and Reproduction
- Cardiology Unit
- Four units under contract
- Unit Biomechanics and Locomotor Pathology of the Horse
- Microbiology Unit Food-Safety-Quality (MASQ)
- Epidemiology Unit of Animal Infectious Diseases (EPIM)
- USC Bartonella
- Two units own
- Neurobiology
- Ophthalmology
Clinical Services
Different animal species are treated in the ENVA in four clinics. These clinics have an educational function for training, and a veterinary public service role by caring for the animal owners.
- Four distinct clinical activities
- The University Hospital of Alfort Veterinary school (CHUVA) , which hosts Companion animals, dogs, cats and exotic pets (NAC)
- The Equine Clinic for horses, ponies and donkeys
- The Large Animals clinic for farm animals (cattle, sheep, goats)
- The Wildlife Clinic
Emergency services and hospitalization are opened 24/7 for all species.
Activity in several buildings
- The CHUVA (teaching hospital) , a 3 600 m2 and 3 floors building includes all the clinical activities of pets. Approximately 35 000 procedures per year occure in that hospital.
- The equine activity is available on the Alfort site and is complemented by specialized medicine and surgery in the Dozulé (CIRALE) site, specialized in locomototion pathologies.
- The large animal clinic is located on the Alfort site and on the Champignelle one.
- The wildlife clinic concentrates its activities on the Alfort site.
