Hindgut fermenters evolved to eat a herbivorous diet. Therefore they ingest large quantities of insoluble plant carbohydrates, such as cellulose, hemicelluloses and pentosans. Mammalian enzymes cannot digest these insoluble carbohydrates, but microbial enzymes can. Introduction
