- Large offspring may pccur naturally, but is more common with Artificial Insemination with the semen of a large breed into a small dam.
- Passage of the foetus through the birth canal is restricted. The oversized foetus presents three barriers to delivery:
- Head
- Shoulders
- Hips
Treatment
- Traction can be applied to assist delivery, but this carries the risk of pelvic fracture.
- Caesarian
Large Offspring Syndrome
- Only seems to arise with IVF treatment
- Foetus and internal organs are enlarged
- Musculoskeletal abnormalities
- Increased post-partum abnormalities and mortality
