In progressive renal disease, diminished renal reserve → renal insufficiency → renal failure and end stage renal disease.
- Renal insufficiency is seen with loss of 50-70% of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), azotaemia with loss of >75% of the GFR and renal failure and uraemia when the GFR is below 30%.
Definitions
Azotaemia - condition characterised by abnormal levels of nitrogen containing compounds such as urea and creatinine in the blood. Is one of the clinical characteristics of uraemia.
Uraemia - a clinical syndrome of renal failure in which blood urea levels are higher than normal.
