These are a new group of drugs derived from the fermentation products of fungus. They work by causing a chain of pre-synaptic events that lead to the release of inhibitory neuropeptides. This results in flaccid paralysis and death of the nematode.
Emodepside is the only one currently used in the veterinary field. It is used as a spot-on in cats to treat ascarids and hookworms. This is a developing group of drugs and over the next few years more may be made available.
