Lizard Traumatic Wounds

Wounds are not uncommon in reptiles. Infected wounds should be flushed copiously with sterile saline or balanced electrolyte solutions.

  • Anaesthesia and surgery might be necessary in more severe cases.
  • An antibiotic treatment (topical and systemic antibiotics) is usually required for contaminated wounds.
  • All but minor open wounds should be bandaged (Antiseptic liquid bandage - New Skin, Prestige Brands Holdings, Inc., Irvington, NY) can be used for superficial wounds).
  • Healing can take anywhere from a few months to a year; wound bandaging/ cleaning should be done daily or every other day.
