The wall of the hoof is the element of the hoof that is visible. The wall of the hoof is widest at the dorsal aspect of the hoof, i.e. at the toe. The wall of the hoof decreases in width laterally and medially (around the quarters of the hoof) until the wall folds back on itself to form the rounded heel at the back of the hoof. These folded parts continue in a cranial direction across the underneath of the hoof for a short distance forming the 'bars' which are visible adjacent to the 'frog' (see below).
