The family Loxocemidae consists of a single monotypic genus, ''Loxocemus''. The Mexican burrowing python (''L. bicolor'') is distributed in southern Mexico and Central America. It has a pelvic girdle, is semi-burrowing and nocturnal, feeds on egg and young reptiles and is oviparous.
